In REDO for Positive Change & Transformation

Why Redirect? When you find yourself going in the wrong direction, stop, look, listen; use all the tools available to you to find the right way to your preferred destination.

The great thing about redirecting is that if you miss the mark and miss your goal, you can simply change course. When you are heading down a certain path, but you’re not sure if you’re going the right way, use a compass or stop and ask for directions—and sometimes, you might even choose to take another path. In time, the reason for the altered course will make itself known to you.

What Can You Redirect?

  • Your focus
  • Your energy
  • Your priorities
  • Your physiology
  • Your conversation

Don’t focus on what you don’t want, because that is exactly the direction you will be heading if you do. Instead, ask yourself what you do want and direct your attention and energy towards it.

Over Steering

Have you ever driven a boat? If so, you have found that changing your direction on the water can require great foresight and effort before the boat fully responds.  Sometimes you have to over-steer to shift position. Once the boat begins to turn, however, you steer in the counter direction to get back on a straight course. When you change directions in your life, be aware that too much redirecting might take you too far, and somewhere that you had not intentionally planned to go.

Your life story needs your proactive attention—to evenly steer and redirect “character, setting, and plot” as is needed. In doing so, your life will have a consistent theme and stay on course.

Don’t Let Your Wake Drive the Boat

Speaking of boats, water, and staying on course, Dr. Wayne Dyer shared a brilliant metaphor for releasing your past to move in the direction of your dreams. Imagine you are on a boat and the horizon ahead represents your future. As you are steering the boat, your present-moment energy is moving you forward. Behind you, you will see a turbulent and frothy wake which has left a trail of foam. It represents the past.

Are you living in the present and choosing a deliberate course of action, or do you continuously look back and allow the events of your past to preoccupy and dominate your thoughts? Begin to redirect your attention to the present moment so that your focus drives you to where you want to go.
